Dresden and Berlin Airport

Dresden has an international airport located in Klotzsche, 9 kilometres from the centre of Dresden. It offers international flights especially around the Mediterranean and thus especially for German tourist destinations. Interesting for you : Basel, Zurich, Amsterdam or London. Berlin Airport (Schönefeld) is only 1 hour and 40 minutes away from Dresden and there are also bus lines that will take you to the Saxon capital. Travelling by train

A very good alternative to flying to Dresden is to travel by train, so you can enjoy the beautiful German landscape and reduce your impact on the environment. The German railways (DB) and companies in your country offer interesting packages, often including hotel accommodation. For example: Strasbourg-Dresden in 7 hours. Photo: © VVO GmbH

Public transport

the public limited company operates twelve tramway lines on a rail network of approximately 134 kilometres. The tramway is complemented by 27 city bus lines with a total length of approximately 310 kilometres, the two Dresden mountain railways and three Elbe ferries as well as the CarGoTram freight tramway (WV plant). The fares vary depending on the number of areas you travel in. You have zone 10 Dresden for the basic fare; a single ticket valid for one hour at €2.40 (2020 fare), the day ticket at €6 or the "Kleingruppenkarte" day ticket for up to 5 persons at €15. You have to stamp the tickets (on the platform or in the bus/tram). More information on www.dvb.de. Photo: © DVB

Welcome Cards Day Ticket

If you spend a few days in Dresden, it is worth buying a Welcome Card with many discounts and public transport included. You can choose between a card for the city, or with the region, or with free entrance to the main museums, for one, two or three days. The price varies between €12 and €45, the family rate (two adults and up to 4 children under 15 years old) is also very interesting, ranging from €15 to €65. Maps are on sale in different places. The best: The tourist office is located in the basement of the shopping centre next to the Frauenkirche (Neumarkt 2) or at the main railway station (daily from 9am to 7pm). Travelling in Germany : Useful Information

Foreign currencies and credit cards

Like most EU member states Germany introduced the euro (€) in January 2002
   • At Main Bahnhof (ReiseBank AG) Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm

Off course, you can also change in banks, but the exchange rate usually is better here. Credit cards are accepted in many places (VISA, Mastercard). But you should ask in advance whether it is possible to pay by card, just to make sure. Tip are not obligatory, but the standard is up to 10 maximum. Just round up the bill when paying.

Identity documents

Citizens of EU member states and several other countries only need a normal ID card. For many other nationalities a passport valid three months beyond the length of stay is sufficient. In any case, when planning your trip, you should ask at your local German consulate or embassy or at a travel agency about the visa requirements. Dresden still is rather safe, compared to other European cities. Anyway, one should always keep money, credit and ID card in separate places.
Tip: Take a photo of your identity cards with your mobile phone. Take special care of pick pockets in tourist areas such as train stations and airports. Ignore the people who want you to sign a "petition", of course it's all about money. The "Shell game" is not a game, but a fraudulent method of collaborative perpetrators, in which only the perpetrators win! Never stop at them.

Insurance

When staying in Europe, EU citizens (and Swiss) must have the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Citizens of other countries should thoroughly inquire at their health insurance about the necessary conditions to get their expenses for medical treatment in Germany reimbursed. If you are planning a long-term stay, you should consider an additional private insurance.
